Dakota Ultrasonics Transducer Wedges
F.A.Q.
How do I choose between 45°, 60°, and 70° refracted wedge angles?
- 70° Wedge: Best for thin plates (
0.25"to0.75") and shallow skip paths to reach root passes with a steep beam angle. - 60° Wedge: The industry standard for medium-to-thick structural welds (
0.50"to1.50") and 30° V-groove bevels. - 45° Wedge: Used for heavy plate and thick-wall piping (
over 1.50") and detecting root cracks or T-joint defects.
Can I use a Quick Change Transducer with a Standard SW Wedge?
No. Quick Change Transducers feature a threaded cylindrical nose that only threads into QW Quick Change Wedges. Standard Transducers use a rectangular screw-mount base designed exclusively for SW Standard Wedges and SNW Snail Wedges.
Do I need couplant between the transducer and the wedge?
Yes. Always place a small drop of ultrasonic couplant or light oil between the transducer face and the wedge mounting surface before tightening or threading them together to eliminate trapped air gaps.
